On Wednesday, December 13, 2023, a major security breach occurred in the Indian parliament, when a man jumped into the lawmakers’ area of the lower house, or Lok Sabha, from the visitors’ gallery. The incident happened on the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, which killed nine people and triggered a military standoff between India and Pakistan.
According to TV channels, the man was wearing a black jacket and was one of the two unauthorised men who entered the Lok Sabha premises. The other man was caught by security personnel near the entrance gate. The motive and identity of the intruders are not yet clear, and an investigation is underway.
The security breach raised serious questions about the safety of the parliament complex, which is supposed to be one of the most secured places in the country. The complex has a multi-layered security arrangement involving several forces and state-of-the-art technology. However, the intruders managed to bypass the security checks and enter the building with a fake identity sticker on their car.
The incident also caused a commotion in the Lok Sabha, which was in session at the time of the attack. Although the Houses had been adjourned 40 minutes prior to the incident, many parliamentarians and staff were present inside the building. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, adjourned the House for the day after the incident and expressed his concern over the security lapse. He also ordered a probe into the matter and asked for a report within a week.
The incident was condemned by various political parties and leaders, who demanded strict action against the culprits and the security agencies responsible for the breach. The Home Minister, Amit Shah, assured the House that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the parliament and the MPs. He also said that the government would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the functioning of the parliament or the democracy of the country.
